Swim diaper rules vary between pools and swim schools, so check the facility’s written policy before you visit. A venue may accept either type, specify reusable or disposable, or require a particular outer layer.
Why policies differ
Local requirements and facility operating policies are not identical. The CDC’s Model Aquatic Health Code is guidance rather than federal law; jurisdictions can adopt, modify or use parts of it. Policies you may encounter
- One reusable swim diaper.
- A disposable swim diaper with a reusable cover.
- Either type, sometimes with a swimsuit over it.
- An age-based rule that applies even when a young child is potty trained.
These are examples, not universal standards. Follow the instructions from the specific pool or swim school you plan to use.
What swim diapers can and cannot do
The CDC states that swim diapers may help hold in some solid stool but are not leak-proof. They do not prevent diarrhea-causing germs from contaminating the water. Anyone with diarrhea should stay out of the water.
Caregivers should check swim diapers frequently and change them in a designated changing area away from the poolside. Wash hands after changing.
