What to Pack for Your Baby's First Swim Lesson: A Complete Checklist

Swim Guide · Swim lessons

Pack a swim diaper, two towels, a change of clothes for your baby and yourself, and arrive early enough to change without rushing. Those basics cover most parent-and-baby swim classes. Your facility may have its own rules, so check its welcome email or website before the first lesson.

Baby swim lesson checklist

Essentials

  • A swim diaper if your baby is not potty trained. Read whether your pool requires a swim diaper and which type it accepts.
  • Two towels: one for the pool deck and one that stays dry in the bag.
  • A complete change of clothes for your baby, including a regular diaper for after the lesson.
  • A change of clothes for you. You may get wetter than expected while changing or carrying your baby.

Useful extras

  • A swimsuit or rash guard to wear over the swim diaper, if your facility allows it.
  • A warm hooded towel or robe for after the lesson.
  • A waterproof bag for wet swimwear and a reusable swim diaper.
  • A bottle, water or an age-appropriate snack for after class.
  • A familiar small toy or comfort item for the changing room.

Leave regular diapers out of the pool

A regular diaper has an absorbent core that takes on pool water and swells. Put the regular diaper on after swimming, not underneath the swim diaper.

Before you leave home

  1. Check the facility policy. Swim diaper rules vary by facility; some specify reusable, disposable or a particular layering method.
  2. Check the fit. Learn how to size a swim diaper by weight. The waist and leg openings should sit close to the skin without deep pressure marks.
  3. Ask about class logistics. Confirm arrival time, changing facilities, where strollers can go and whether the facility supplies any equipment.

Reusable or disposable?

The practical choice depends on how often you swim. Reusable or disposable swim diapers both have a place: reusable options suit regular lessons, while disposable options can be convenient for occasional swims. Many families carry both.

The Paddle Pals reusable swim diaper is a neoprene pull-on for babies and toddlers 6–24 months, up to 33 lb, sold singly or as a two-pack.

One health reminder

Swim diapers may help hold in solid stool, but they are not leak-proof and do not prevent germs from entering pool water. The CDC advises checking them frequently, changing them away from the poolside and keeping anyone with diarrhea out of the water. See the CDC’s swim diaper guidance.

Adult supervision is required at all times, in any pool and at any depth.
