Baby Swim Bag Checklist: What to Pack for Swim Lessons

Swim Guide · Swim lessons

Published by Baby Paddle Pals; we sell swim diapers and swim training vests mentioned here.

A baby swim bag needs a swim diaper plus a spare, a regular diaper for afterwards, two towels, a full change of clothes for your baby and for you, wipes, a snack and a wet bag for swimsuits. Keep wet and dry things apart, and rinse the reusable swim diaper as soon as you can after class.

If this is your first lesson, start with what to pack for your baby's first swim lesson. This checklist is for the weeks after that: one bag you can restock each week and grab on the way out, with a simple system for wet and dry.

The baby swim bag checklist

Section Pack Why
Swim kit Swim diaper (worn or on top), a spare swim diaper, swimsuit A spare means a poop or a lost swim diaper doesn't end the lesson
Dry side Two towels, full change of clothes for baby, a regular diaper, a warm layer One towel for poolside, one that stays dry for afterwards
Changing kit Wipes, a changing mat, nappy sacks or a small bag for used diapers Changing rooms can be busy and wet
Wet side A wet bag for swimsuits and the reusable swim diaper Keeps wet gear away from dry clothes
For you Your own swimwear, towel and dry clothes, a water bottle You will be in the water too
After class Your baby's usual milk or an age-appropriate snack Babies are often hungry after swimming

Why a wet bag for swimsuits earns its place

A wet bag is a waterproof-lined pouch that zips or ties shut. After class, the swimsuit, the reusable swim diaper and a damp towel go straight in, and the rest of the bag stays dry. Look for one that:

  • has a waterproof lining and a closure that stops drips,
  • is big enough for a swimsuit, a swim diaper and a small towel,
  • can be washed itself, or wiped clean,
  • ideally has two compartments, so you can pack dry items on the way there and wet on the way back.

A wet bag is for the trip home, not for storage. Our care page says: "Do not leave wet gear sealed in a swim bag." Empty it as soon as you get in.

How many swim diapers to pack

Pack two: one to wear and one spare. The CDC advises caregivers to "Frequently check swim diapers and swim pants (about every 60 minutes) and change them in a diaper-changing area—away from the poolside." A spare also helps if you swim twice a week and the first one is still drying.

Ocean Pals is a neoprene pull-on swim diaper that helps hold in solids. It is not leak-proof, so fit matters: 6–12 M fits up to 24 lb and 12–24 M fits 24–33 lb. The 2-pack is $34.99, or $23.99 for one.

After the lesson: rinse, dry, repack

  1. Rinse the swim diaper inside and out in fresh water to remove chlorine.
  2. Gently press out excess water. Don't twist or wring it hard.
  3. When it needs a wash, hand wash in cold water with mild soap and rinse well.
  4. Hang or lay flat in shade with airflow until completely dry. No tumble dryer.
  5. Restock the bag: dry swim diaper and spare, fresh towels, clothes and wipes.

Full steps are on our care instructions page.

Tip: save this checklist on your phone and repack the night before, once everything is dry.

Questions parents ask

What should I pack in a baby swim bag?

A swim diaper and a spare, a regular diaper for afterwards, two towels, a full change of clothes for your baby and for you, wipes, a snack and a wet bag for swimsuits.

What is a wet bag for swimsuits?

A waterproof-lined pouch that zips or ties shut. It holds the wet swimsuit, the reusable swim diaper and a damp towel on the way home, so the rest of the bag stays dry.

How many swim diapers should I pack for swim lessons?

Two: one to wear and one spare. The CDC advises checking swim diapers about every 60 minutes and changing them away from the poolside.

Can I leave a wet swim diaper in the swim bag?

Only for the trip home. Take it out, rinse it in fresh water and air dry it completely. Do not leave wet gear sealed in a swim bag.

Do I need a regular diaper in the swim bag?

Yes. Put a regular diaper on after swimming, not under the swim diaper in the pool. Its absorbent core soaks up water and swells.

Adult supervision within arm's reach, at all times. Paddle Pals vests are swim training aids, not life jackets or PFDs, and are not USCG approved. A vest does not make a child water-safe; never leave a child unattended in or near water. Swim diapers provide no buoyancy.
