Newborns can wear swim diapers made in newborn sizes, but first ask your pediatrician whether your baby is ready for the pool, and check the pool's rules. Ocean Pals fits from about 6 months up to 33 lb. It isn't made for newborns, and it won't fit a toddler over 33 lb.

Parents ask us about both ends of the range: a 3-month-old heading to a holiday pool, and a 3T toddler who still needs a swim diaper.

Before a newborn's first swim

A swim diaper is the easy part. The bigger question is whether your baby should be in the pool yet. Talk to your pediatrician first. Then check the pool's rules, because some pools and classes set a minimum age.

The AAP does not recommend infant swim classes for babies under 1. It says "there is currently no evidence that infant swim programs for babies under 1 year old lower their drowning risk." It adds: "It's OK to enroll in a parent-child water play class to help your infant get used to being in the pool". For classes for children under 4, it also says: "Keep the water warm. Hypothermia is a greater risk at this age."

What swim diaper fits a 3-month-old?

Look for a swim diaper labelled for your baby's current weight. The waist and both leg openings should sit close to the skin with no gaps and no deep marks. A swim diaper that is too big gapes at the thighs and can't do its job. The CDC says swim diapers "might hold in some solid feces (poop), they are not leak-proof." A loose fit makes that worse.

Don't size up for growing room. Ocean Pals 6–12 M starts at a 13.4 in waist. If your baby's waist is smaller, it won't sit snugly yet. Wait until it does.

From about 6 months: Ocean Pals

Ocean Pals is a soft neoprene pull-on swim diaper that helps hold in solids. Choose by weight first: 6–12 M fits up to 24 lb, and 12–24 M fits 24–33 lb. If your baby is between sizes, compare the waist and thigh measurements on the size guide.

Swim diaper 3T: what fits older toddlers?

Clothing sizes like 2T and 3T vary by brand, so go by weight, not the label in their clothes. Up to 33 lb, Ocean Pals 12–24 M can still fit a bigger toddler if the waist and thighs measure in range. Over 33 lb, it won't fit, so look for a larger swim diaper or a swim pant sold for swimming.

Is there a reusable swim diaper for 3T?

Can a newborn go in a swimming pool?

Ask your pediatrician first and check the pool's rules. The AAP does not recommend infant swim classes for babies under 1, but says a parent-child water play class is OK. Keep the water warm and stay within arm's reach.

Adult supervision within arm's reach, at all times. Paddle Pals vests are swim training aids, not life jackets or PFDs, and are not USCG approved. A vest does not make a child water-safe; never leave a child unattended in or near water. Swim diapers provide no buoyancy.
