What Does a Baby Wear to Swim Lessons? A Simple Checklist

A baby wears two things to swim lessons: a snug swim diaper and a regular baby swimsuit. The swim diaper goes on first and helps hold in solids. The swimsuit goes over it, or Ocean Pals can be worn on its own. Add a swim training vest only if your class allows one, and stay within arm's reach.

Your swim school's welcome email probably asks for a swim diaper and not much else. The fit advice comes from the AAP's HealthyChildren site. When choosing lessons for children under 4, it says "A good program should also require the child to wear a swimsuit that is snug-fitting at the legs to help avoid spreading body waste into the water."

Layer 1: the swim diaper

The swim diaper is the item pools and swim schools usually ask for. The CDC puts it plainly: swim diapers "might hold in some solid feces (poop), they are not leak-proof." Fit is what makes the difference, so choose by weight first and check the waist and thighs. Ocean Pals is a soft neoprene pull-on. The 6–12 M size fits up to 24 lb (waist 13.4–18.5 in). The 12–24 M size fits 24–33 lb (waist 16.5–19.7 in).

Never put a regular diaper in the pool. Its absorbent core soaks up water and swells. Put it on after class instead.

Layer 2: a regular baby swimsuit

Any ordinary baby swimsuit works over a swim diaper. For lessons, comfort matters more than style:

  • Close fit. A swimsuit that lies flat against the body is easier to move in than loose, heavy fabric.
  • Easy on, easy off.
  • Room for the swim diaper. The suit should cover the swim diaper without pulling it out of place at the legs.

Toddler swimsuit for swim lessons: pick a suit they can move in, and check that the swim diaper's leg openings still sit flat after a squat.

Layer 3 (optional): a swim training vest

Some classes teach without any equipment, and some supply their own. Ask your instructor before you buy. If a vest is allowed, choose by age and weight and never use one outside its labelled range:

  • 6–24 months, up to 33 lb: Mermaid Dreams, a front-zip foam vest with an under-leg strap. $36.99.
  • 2–6 years, 33–66 lb: Sea Adventure swim training vest. $29.99.

Training aid only. Paddle Pals vests are not life jackets or PFDs and are not USCG approved. A vest does not make a child water-safe. Stay within arm's reach.

Questions parents ask

What does a baby wear to swim lessons?

A snug swim diaper and a regular baby swimsuit. The swim diaper goes on first and helps hold in solids. The swimsuit goes over it. A swim training vest is optional and only if your class allows one.

Does my baby need a swimsuit and a swim diaper?

The swim diaper is the part pools require for children who are not potty trained. A swimsuit over it is usual, but Ocean Pals can also be worn on its own. Check your swim school's rules.

What size swim diaper should my baby wear to swim lessons?

Go by weight. Ocean Pals 6–12 M fits up to 24 lb and 12–24 M fits 24–33 lb. If your baby is between sizes, compare the waist and thigh measurements.

What should a toddler wear to swim lessons?

A swim diaper if they are not potty trained or the pool requires one, plus a swimsuit they can move freely in. Check that the swim diaper's leg openings stay flat when they squat and climb.

Should my baby wear a swim vest to swim lessons?

Only if your instructor allows it. Mermaid Dreams fits 6–24 months up to 33 lb, and Sea Adventure fits 2–6 years, 33–66 lb. Both are swim training aids, not life jackets, so stay within arm's reach.

Adult supervision within arm's reach, at all times. Paddle Pals vests are swim training aids, not life jackets or PFDs, and are not USCG approved. A vest does not make a child water-safe; never leave a child unattended in or near water. Swim diapers provide no buoyancy.
