What a swim diaper actually does

A swim diaper is worn in place of a regular diaper in the water. It isn't absorbent, and that's the point — a regular diaper swells with water and sags. Swim diapers are designed to stay close to the body while your child moves. Most swim schools, public pools and splash pads ask that children who aren't potty trained wear one.

Adult supervision is required at all times. This is a swim accessory for supervised water play — it is not a flotation aid and provides no buoyancy.

Why parents choose reusable over disposable

A reusable swim diaper is worn, rinsed and worn again, which suits families who swim on a regular schedule — weekly lessons, a summer pool membership, a beach holiday. Disposables suit one-off swims where you don't want to pack anything home wet. Many families keep both: reusables for the weekly class, a disposable in the bag as backup.

The neoprene body also has a warmer feel against the skin than a thin polyester shell, and the pull-on cut gives a cleaner one-piece look under or instead of a swimsuit.

Getting the fit right

Choose by your child's current weight first, then check the waist measurement. The waist and leg openings should sit close to the body without pressing or leaving deep marks. You want the openings snug against the skin with no gaping — but your child should still be able to kick, squat and move freely.

If your child is between sizes, size down rather than up. A swim diaper that's too loose doesn't do its job.

Care

Rinse in fresh water after every swim, then hang or lay flat to air dry. No tumble dryer, no bleach, no iron. Pool chemicals and salt water both break neoprene down over time, so the rinse matters more than a wash. Designed for repeated use when cared for as directed.
